Rosemary sat back down behind the table and tried to still her trembling hands. She had initially placed them on the table-top, but their tremors were too obvious, so she sat on them, instead.
This was also very conspicuous. Nikki peered at her. âWhere did you two go?â She looked around. âAnd what happened to Stephen? Did you murder him behind the gym? Because weâre going to have to hide the body. You canât just leave it there.â
âHe left,â Rosemary said simply. âHe had to go.â
âThat only answers one of my questions,â Nikki observed. âAnd really only halfway. Where did he go? To heaven or to hell?â
âHe apologized for his friend.â
âHis girlfriend, you mean.â
âNo, not his girlfriend. Just a house-guest.â
Nikki snorted. âLegs there was not just a house-guest. Donât let him sell you a story like that.â
âShe was,â Rosemary insisted. âHe told me there was nothing going on. She just needed a weekend out of the city, so she stayed with him.â
âOf course! And why would he lie to you about that?â Nikki asked sarcastically, pushing back from the table. âWhy would a man with money and a hot blonde at his side ever lie?â
Rosemary sighed. The gym felt unbearably close after the freshness of the spring day outside, and she felt lost and aimless without Stephen nearby. Heâd gone back around the side of the gym, promising to take Sasha to lunch and then get her packed into her car and back to New York as soon as possible, while Rosemary had come in the back door.
âDinner tomorrow night,â heâd insisted before they parted. âI know you have the horses to take care of, but weâre going out, so feed them early. Do you need me to come help? Iâll come help. This canât wait. Not another day.â
What could she say? She didnât want to wait another day, either. She didnât want to wait another minute. Stephen was in her blood, and every inch of her was given over to craving him, longing for him. It was all she could do not to run out the front door of the gym and seek him out, if only to watch him drive away, see the tail-lights of his car disappearing.
Rosemary realized if she didnât force herself to actually do something, she was going to go out of her mind. Maybe not literally, but it certainly felt that way. She had butterflies in her stomach, her hands were shaking, and she couldnât seem to focus her eyes on a single thing for more than a second. She had to pull herself together, for the sake of the farm.
Luckily, she knew of something extremely sobering which would take all of the magic right out of her day. She stood up, shoving her hands into her pockets, and turned to Nikki. âCan you hold down the fort? Iâm going to go talk to Caitlin.â
