Rosemary sat back down behind the table and tried to still her trembling hands. She had initially placed them on the table-top, but their tremors were too obvious, so she sat on them, instead.

This was also very conspicuous. Nikki peered at her. “Where did you two go?” She looked around. “And what happened to Stephen? Did you murder him behind the gym? Because we’re going to have to hide the body. You can’t just leave it there.”

“He left,” Rosemary said simply. “He had to go.”

“That only answers one of my questions,” Nikki observed. “And really only halfway. Where did he go? To heaven or to hell?”

“He apologized for his friend.”

“His girlfriend, you mean.”

“No, not his girlfriend. Just a house-guest.”

Nikki snorted. “Legs there was not just a house-guest. Don’t let him sell you a story like that.”

“She was,” Rosemary insisted. “He told me there was nothing going on. She just needed a weekend out of the city, so she stayed with him.”

“Of course! And why would he lie to you about that?” Nikki asked sarcastically, pushing back from the table. “Why would a man with money and a hot blonde at his side ever lie?”

Rosemary sighed. The gym felt unbearably close after the freshness of the spring day outside, and she felt lost and aimless without Stephen nearby. He’d gone back around the side of the gym, promising to take Sasha to lunch and then get her packed into her car and back to New York as soon as possible, while Rosemary had come in the back door.

“Dinner tomorrow night,” he’d insisted before they parted. “I know you have the horses to take care of, but we’re going out, so feed them early. Do you need me to come help? I’ll come help. This can’t wait. Not another day.”

What could she say? She didn’t want to wait another day, either. She didn’t want to wait another minute. Stephen was in her blood, and every inch of her was given over to craving him, longing for him. It was all she could do not to run out the front door of the gym and seek him out, if only to watch him drive away, see the tail-lights of his car disappearing.

Rosemary realized if she didn’t force herself to actually do something, she was going to go out of her mind. Maybe not literally, but it certainly felt that way. She had butterflies in her stomach, her hands were shaking, and she couldn’t seem to focus her eyes on a single thing for more than a second. She had to pull herself together, for the sake of the farm.

Luckily, she knew of something extremely sobering which would take all of the magic right out of her day. She stood up, shoving her hands into her pockets, and turned to Nikki. “Can you hold down the fort? I’m going to go talk to Caitlin.”
